Personal Skill Required
Minimum of three years experience working on automotive and industrial seat cushion repairs and upholstery work.
Automotive electronic or electrical experience is needed, as an understanding of the systems and skills in the use of meters and wire harness work is essential, if this level of experience is not available then training of the personnel is required.

To minimize possible damage to vehicle computerized equipment, use an approved automotive digital volt-ohm meter.

Prior to Starting Installation
If the vehicle seat is equipped with SIDE AIR BAGS or OCCUPANT SENSORS the vehicle service manual and technical bulletins must be consulted before any work on the seat is undertaken. Do not install ComfortZone products in seats containing sensors. Check and determine that the heating panels will fit under the seat cushion covers in the desired areas.

Locate vehicle fuse panel and determine routing of wire. (Maximum length of harness is limited to 12 feet (3.6 meters) if extended. Ensure that the vehicle has 12-14 volt system, and that ignition switched power is available at the fuse panel, by way of a 20 amp fuse that can be tapped or an empty fuse socket (10 amps or greater) which can be used to supply ignition switched power (through the 7.5 amp fuse supplied in the kit). Tap only one fuse per seat. Never use engine control ECM, safety devices, ABS/SRS, or engine cooling fan, etc. to power the seat heater or heater/cooler combination unit.

*lf any one of the conditions on this page cannot be met, installation should not be attempted.
Installation of Seat Heater Units:
1. Remove the seat and the desired seat cushion covers and ensure the heater/cooler elements can be installed in the seat configuration you are addressing.

2. Affix the heating panels to the seat foam by placing adhesive strips (if necessary) on the desired area.

BE SURE THE THERMOSTAT IS ON THE DOWN SIDE AGAINST THE FOAM OF SEAT
WARNING: METAL, ELECTRICAL CONDUCTORS OR HOG RINGS ARE NOT TO BE PLACED ON, OR THROUGH THE WIRES. THIS MAY CAUSE AN ELECTRICAL SHORT. YOU CAN USE HOG RINGS OR WIRE TIES THROUGH MESH ONLY, TO HELP SECURE COVER IF NESSESARY.

If the seat cover is attached with Velcro, you may attach it through the mesh. Do not fold or double over a heating panel so that two surfaces touch. This may cause a hot spot to develop.

Mark the installation date on the two panels with a permanent black marker (i.e. JAN 03).

3. Use plastic wire-ties to hold wires in place. Check that the reclining of the seats or that the metal seat plates which move do not pull or fray the wires.

4. Re-install scat cushion covers. Ensure that the wires will not pull or fray.

5. To install the round switch — drill a 3/4” — 13/16” hole on the seat trim molding, console or dash. Use care to not drill an oversize hole.

6. While the seat is out, run the electrical harness under the floor cover to the fuse panel. (Along with the vehicle wire harness.)

** NEVER LAY WIRE ACROSS THE FLOOR PAN WHERE OCCUPANTS’ FEET AND WATER MAY BE PRESENT.
7. Locate the desired fuse outlet and make connections to an ignition switched source for power, utilizing the necessary fuse tap and wire ends through the 7.5 amp fuse supplied. Only one seat per fuse.

8. Install the ground wire terminal on a sill rail, post or seat anchor bolt. Ensure that a star washer is used to help provide a good ground. Never drill through a floor pan. Two or three layers of metal are required for the ground screw.

9. Install seat. Connect power harness to the seat.

10. Check time to heat and the cycle of the thermostat.
Heat-up time: (_” (1.25 cm) foam cover over elements) 2 to 3 minutes or less to feel heat. The seat heaters will peak in temperature by as much as 8°F (5°C) above the 113°F (45°C). The thermostat will then stop the heat and stabilize at that level. Note: Above relates to laboratory conditions. Testing in vehicles will be influenced by numerous extraneous factors causing fluctuations in temperature.
The more cover material over the element the longer it takes to feel heat and the less heat that will be felt.

11. Educate the purchaser:
Explain the operation of the seat heater or combo unit to the customer and how the switch works. The back or seat-bottom heater may reach thermal limit and shut off before the other does. This is normal as each panel has its own thermostat.
Explain how seat heaters and coolers can save fuel and help the environment with less engine idling to pre-heat or cool the vehicle’s interior. Explain how seat coolers dissipate body heat and perspiration to inhibit discomfort that comes from extended driving periods.
Explain warranty policy! Owners Manual and fill out required lines on Warranty Registration Card.12. Leave the installation and owner’s manual with a brochure in the vehicle for future reference and diagnosis. Have customer fill personal information on warranty card and ask them to mail it. * Stamp your business name on the Owners Manual.

Additional Instructions for Combination Heater/Cooler Unit (CCU410):
a. First be sure seat cover is perforated leather, vinyl or cloth. Cooler units will not work on non-perforated leather or vinyl. There must be air flow through the seat cover to function!

b. After removing the seat cover, place the combination unit on the foam of the seat to determine the best location for the system taking care to insure the fan does not contact the metal in the seat frame in the area where the seat back and bottom meet. Move the unit away from metal frames if necessary to insure no contact exists and the fan is not felt by driver or passengers.

c. Outline a “template” of the ventilation end of the unit, marking the place for the fan housing.

d. With a sharp blade or rotary tool cut a square recess hole for fan to be set down and into and slightly lower than the cushion level – so as to not feel the fan housing when seat cover is reinstalled. Remember, the seat foam will condense when sat on, the fan will not!

e. With the system removed from the seat, finish by cutting a 2” hole in the center of the fan recess completely through the foam to allow for air intake. This is extremely important! In seat backs, this air access can be covered up with our Seat Cooler Vent Kit # SCK000 if necessary to maximize air flow to the seat-back cooler fan.

f. Test fit the combo unit before gluing or hog-ringing to insure seat cover refitting checking for high spots or “bumps” to insure comfort of seated passenger.

g. Mount the system in place gluing the ventilation (fan) side of the unit to foam, insuring proper placement and retention in this position. Finally follow necessary steps to insure that the heating element is properly placed and replace seat cover. Repeat for seat back and check to be sure system is working properly in both modes being sure to install vent kit if necessary in bottom of seat back to insure maximum possible air flow and comfort level for driver/passenger.

Trouble Shooting of the Electrical System for the ComfortZone Heater and Combo Units:
* If the system does not heat up or fan does not function, indicating lack of power to unit:
Check the fuse; 7-1/2 amps (in a separate fuse holder).
The temperature of the seat may be above the present thermostat temperature and will not allow it to come on. (Sun shining on the seat!!) The back and bottom seat heaters have separate thermostats and work independently of each other. On the High/Low system the heaters are run in series for the low position.
If the light on the heated seat switch (where applicable) does not come on, it could be that the switch bulb is burnt out (replace the switch) or that there is no power to the switch, again, first check fuse; (Electrical trouble shooting is to be done by experienced personnel.)

* Note: The system is designed to have both seat and back heaters working together.
Electrical Trouble Shooting:
Ensure that all connectors are properly coupled and that the ground wire is properly grounded.
Use a digital ohm meter, test only the heating elements (switch not included) from the under seat wire connector, If high resistance is found, while ambient cabin temperature Is below 104°F (40°C), then an open condition exists.
Check internal wire connectors for an open circuit. If a heating element has an open circuit, install a new heating element (use installation instructions herein).
If the heating panels and seat harness test OK, then a power supply problem exists.
Using a Digital volt meter, start at the source and trace back through all the connectors and switch to determine where the power loss is occurring! Repair as necessary.
If the seat heater fuse repeadly blows, then a short or a ground of power exists.
If the vehicle’s fuse, which happens to have the heated seat fuse tap connected to it, continues to blow, then the tap may be on the wrong side of that fuse. It must be on the + side of the fuse socket.
